Smethwick is a small indusrial town with a fascinating history which this Society seeks to explore and record for the benefit of future generations.
It has been the home of scions of industry such as Matthew Boulton, James Watt and world famous products such as Ruskin Pottery, Camm stained glass windows and Chance's lighthouse lenses were produced here.
If you would like to find out more, why not become a member (see Membership Page) and attend our varied programme of meetings (see Programme Page) or, if you do not live locally, then keep in touch via our highly informative quarterly Newsletter. We also offer occasional visits to places of interest, hold a summer picnic and a Christmas social where you have an opportunity to meet like-minded people and make your own contribution to the history of Smethwick. We have over 100 members, many of whom are local and attend meetings, but others live in various parts of the country and some are as far afield as Australia and America. Those who cannot attend meetings are kept in touch through our Newsletter which contains, amongst other things, detailed write-ups of talks given at our meetings and these are much appreciated by our more distant members.
We also have social events such as a Christmas Social where our own wassail bowl is filled with mulled wine and shared amongst members; we hold an annual picnic in Warley Woods where we are given an update of the activities of Warley Woods Community Trust; we usually have a visit to a local place of interest and a have a guided evening walk around Smethwick. In 2009 we made a subsidised visit to the Houses of Parliament and were shown round by our local MP, John Spellar; we also appear at local events such as Smethwick Heritage Centre Roadshows where we exhibit our publications.
